In the EU, dental amalgam is going to be banned as of January 2025, is your dental practice ready for the trickle-down effect this will have in the UK?
Why is dental amalgam being banned in the EU? Dental amalgam has been a target since the 2017 EU mercury regulation came into effect, which aims to protect health and the environment from the possible effects of mercury.
While there has been no conclusive evidence that dental amalgam has any adverse health effects on patients, the regulation considers the full life cycle of mercury, from mining to waste disposal. Mining mercury is harmful to miners exposed to the vapours, and upon discard, the mercury also harms the environment.
As a result of this ban, it will be prohibited to export dental amalgam from the EU from 1st January 2025 – drastically affecting UK supply chains.
As a result of reduced manufacturing, amalgam will become more expensive, nullifying one of the key benefits of the treatment today.
Not sure what to do about this? GC has you covered with a range of scientifically-proven restorative options, suitable for a variety of indications, so that you can continue to deliver effective treatment to your patients.
It is difficult to chose just one dental restorative material for your practice, as every patient and every treatment is different, leading to a wide range of needs – a single solution could never be the perfect option for everything.
Even amalgam has hard limitations, with lacking aesthetics and health and environmental concerns over mercury. So, what are the alternatives? You want to have restorative solutions for every patient, without overloading your inventory with too many overlapping solutions. GC can help.
Strengthen your restorative portfolio with EQUIA Forte HT, G-ænial Universal injectable, and everX Flow from GC. Between the glass hybrid, injectable composite, and fibre reinforced composite, you can cater to every restoration and patient aesthetic preferences, without compromising on clinical value.
In these three products, you will be able to find an alternative to amalgam that you can rely on.
EQUIA Forte HT is the best choice when you need:
As a glass hybrid solution, EQUIA Forte HT is both a forgiving and moisture-tolerant material. This makes it a great choicefor indications when isolation is going to be difficult to achieve. Furthermore, with glass hybrids, there is no need for aseparate bonding process, as they use chemical adhesion.
EQUIA Forte HT is also minimally invasive, necessitating the removal of infected dentine only.
EQUIA Forte HT also has proven long-term success, including for load bearing cavities, that may appeal for restorations that would have previously called for amalgam solutions. This longevity is thanks to a resistant final coating layer.
EQUIA Forte HT is based on 12 years of proven clinical experience.1,2,3,4,5,6
G-ænial Universal Injectable is the ideal choice when you need:
As an injectable composite, G-ænial Universal Injectable has the unique ability to mould itself to any cavity shape, whilestaying in place. This means the material is adaptable and able to flow under pressure, filling all the intricate bumps andgulleys of a cavity space. The thixotropic quality also means that the material is easy to place, flowing smoothly as it isinjected into place.
Based on FSC technology, G-ænial Universal Injectable has a high level of durability over time, thanks to excellent dispersion ensuring that filler particles are evenly distributed.
There is also strong adhesion, creating a sturdy and lastingbond.
everX Flow is the one to pick when you need:
The fibre reinforced composite, everX Flow, is the strongest dentine reinforcement material available from GC. Thefibre reinforcement significantly enhances the tensile strength of the restoration, making it highly resistant to fractureand wear, and able to withstand the stresses of biting and chewing for longer than alternatives. The durability andstrength of this material makes it an ideal choice for large or cracked cavities.
everX Flow also offers easy bulk placement, with layers of up to 5.5mm thickness with the available Bulk shade.
This is made possible by the excellent flowable consistency of the material, allowing everX Flow to ease itself into the cavity and adapt to the shape, while maintaining even distribution and setting.
everX Flow can also be a more affordable solution for patients, as it enables a direct restoration, where an indirect one may have been indicated, enabling fewer steps, less time, and eliminating the potential need for laboratory work.
Unmatched body design is ideal for both single and simultaneous restorations.
With TrollFoil pre-mounted articulating foil from Directa, you can ensure your restorative is as accurate as can be with precise occlusal analysis.
Filtek Supreme Flowable Bulk Fill Restorative offers a smooth transition from material to tooth for aesthetic restorations
Venus Diamond and Venus Pearl stand for ONE efficient and reliable solution independent of one-shading or aesthetic layering demands.
